A grab n go bag will always be by your side, ready for anything.
KYC asks busy individuals what they always have with them when they’re going from point A to point B, B to C, C all the way to D, and D to who knows. Today we’re asking CEO & Founder of Cadence Steph Hon what she brings with her.
I’m often going from my partner’s to my place, my place to work, work to Brooklyn to meet my startup team, and then it’s usually past midnight and I drive home, do a few more things while wearing a face mask, sleep a few hours, and then repeat with tweaks in where I go, who I see, and how much sleep I get. What helps me stay somewhat balanced and together throughout these changing places and people is my go-to bag that I transfer from my backpack to purse to tote. Let me tell you what’s in it.
For Lips A tin of plain Vaseline; ILIA Balmy Days Lip Conditioner, which I usually only use before I go to sleep or after exfoliation; ILIA Balmy Nights Lip Exfoliator, which I’ll use whenever I notice my lips getting chapped or before I put lipstick on, and always layered with the sibling lip conditioner. Glossier Generation G in Zip, which is my go-to for an average day as it adds just the right amount of wind-kissed color. I’ve recently started carrying Ruby Woo by Mac; it’s a classic and is said to compliment Asian skin tones. The Indian philosophy of Ayurveda believes wearing black clothes creates inwardness and energy withdrawal, which is interesting news as New York approaches the winter months of bundled in-more-black-clothing-than-normal-season. However, my workaround is big earrings with color and a lip that follows the same vibrancy. Having a bold color on my lips allows me to keep everything else pretty neutral and minimal, while feeling intentional all at once.
For Scent Ursa Major Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant with mint & eucalyptus– it’s the first deodorant I’ve ever bought (I swear the fact I haven’t needed deodorant until now is an Asian genetic gift passed down from my dad) and I really like the fresh smell. When I transition places I’ll use my energy essential oil roller ball made by a yogi friend as a gift; it’s homemade with orange and peppermint essential oils in a jojoba oil blend. I dab it on my collarbone and behind my ears, put some on my wrists, rub them together, and then take a moment to breathe in the pick-me-up scent. I swear by this (and it’s easy to make!).
For Hands Byredo Bal D’Afrique Hand Cream for dryness and an incredible smell; Byredo Rose Rinse-Free Hand Wash, which makes me feel better post-handling money or the subway. Nail clipper & nail file, as a rock climber at heart there’s truly no irrational stress I feel more than having long nails.
For Business Cadence Personal Business Cards. You never know who you’re going to meet.
For Face Shiseido Oil Blotting Sheets, which legitimately lasted me almost a year. I use these before I leave work as I without a doubt have a “sheen”. I use Fenty Beauty Invisimatte and its magnetic brush for any night out, as it prevents shine in and out of photos (my only wish is that the magnetism would allow them to stay as one when I throw in my bag). A Sephora mirror for applying makeup en route to meetings in the city. Kaia Naturals Juicy Bamboo Face Cleansing Cloths (they are 100% biodegradable and don’t disrupt my skin), which I use when transitioning around 6PM from work to meetings or after work events. The face cleansing cloths and oil blotting sheets function for the same purpose, and I use each depending on what level of re-set I need.
For Glasses Whoosh Tech Hygiene cloth and travel spray. However, the travel spray gets used up quickly, so I bought Koala Kleaner, which is an alcohol-free and ammonia-free eyeglass cleanser in a larger bottle. I use it to fill up my travel spray bottle whenever it’s low. My thought is that if I wash my face everyday, and my glasses are on my face…I should clean those too.
For Makeup Usually, my makeup is in another bag, but depending on where I’m going I’ll transfer my easy regimen into this grab-n-go bag. The regimen is: Glossier Boy Brow Brown, Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense Sunscreen, Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk, my makeup brush and Lorac POREfection Baked Perfecting Powder to keep the shine at bay.
For Body Advil that I put inside an empty Vaseline tin so I don’t have to carry around the large bottle. Port & Polish Vitamin case with Ashwagandha and Triphala from Banyan Botanicals (there’s no gel cap on these), Life Extension Magnesium that helps me fall asleep (I’ll also take before I go on a plane as it helps relieve antsy legs), and Thorne Research Basic Nutrients 2/Day Complete Multivitamin.
For Hair And Other Stories Industrial Hair Clip, as I like that I have one clip that’s more precious, always reliable, and will last me for the foreseeable future.
For Human Nature Tide To Go Instant Stain Remover, as the combination of having nice things, hustling from place to place, and an appetite usually end up in frustration over, “now I have a pesto droplet on my beautiful and favorite Madewell winter jacket, what do I do?” The pen is probably not full of wonderful things, but it really has been a clothes-saver. Pack of mini tissues, which I am glad I had with me when I went to see A Star Is Born. A pen, an iphone/ipad charger, Lola Tampons, and Lola Cleansing Wipes.
For Soul Headphones in a My Tag Alongs Case, which I received at an event and turned out to be useful and equally effective for transporting earrings or jewelry you don’t want to lose. This is my go-to when I make the transition from my partner’s apartment back to mine in the morning; who wants to wear big earrings at 8AM? A recent addition to my bag is packets from Wylde One. Right now I have Yoga In A Cup for Stress and Anxiety Relief, Brain Buzz for Mental Clarity and Focus, and Immune Shrooms for Immune Strength and Vitality. I tried Supertonic Energy for Sustained Energy and Stamina this past week when I was feeling the intensity of having a long night ahead of me. It smelled and tasted like cinnamon, and felt like a proactive and fun end of day warm cup of something. Did it work? I think so. Was it a placebo? Possibly, but I do feel like my energy was at least sustained.
A gold bag from SpaceNK.
