What would you bring with you if you could carry it all?
“‘When you say you’ve got the Cloak, and clothes…’ said Harry, frowning at Hermione, who was carrying nothing except her small beaded handbag, in which she was now rummaging. ‘Yes, they’re here,’ said Hermione, and to Harry and Ron’s utter astonishment, she pulled out a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, some maroon socks, and finally the silvery Invisibility Cloak… She gave the fragile-looking bag a little shake and it echoed like a cargo hold as a number of heavy objects rolled around inside it.”
Ah the infinite bag! Or more specifically for the die-hard Potterheads, the undetectable extension charm. A simple spell that transformed Hermione’s small beaded clutch into a space where everything could fit. Sure the quote above mentions several items, but throughout the course of their journey, the bag was where Hermione also stored a three-person tent and even Godric Gryffindor’s sword. To be fair, I’ve been jealous of this type of magical bag since it first appeared in 1964, with Mary Poppins decorating her area of the children’s nursery with a coat-rack, potted plant, and gilded mirror (to name a few) – all pulled out of a small carpet bag suited for a day trip. In 2018, our fascination with the concept continues with the Netflix Series, Magic for Humans. Not only does magician Justin Willman turn his backpack into this infinite bag, but he also pulls out any item random onlookers shout out – a coffee machine with a fully brewed cup of coffee, and even his own wife. There were no cutaways in that scene, so perhaps he has finally achieved the magic for which we’ve grown up pining.
What I do know is this: magicians never give away their secrets. So it may be some time until we can finally have our own infinite bags (come on Justin!). While I wait, I’ve come up with a list of some things I would absolutely carry in my own infinite bag. Check it out below and leave a comment with yours!
